"LIGHT WEIGHT" ("LW") (ALSO INCLUDES M/1100 "LT") Model 870 LETTER SUFFIX (DESIGNATES GAUGE) So, if the barrel is not original to the specific firearm in question the date code may be meaningless. 'An issue that people need to be aware of, is that many Remington firearms such as the 870 series of shotguns can have their barrels easily changed or replaced. (This has nothing to do with the barrel code & the barrel code has nothing to do with the serial numbers)ġ950 TO APPROX 1968: NO SERIAL NUMBER PREFIXġ968 TO PRESENT: LETTERS USED (IN SEQUENCE) SX Skeet Grade and TX Trap Grade and ADX. ![]() with slug barrel and rifle sights (95.95), and the Model 870. introduced the 12 gauge Model 870 RSS Rifled Slug Special. Its bbl is now 18' cyl (formerly a 30' Full). REMINGTON SHOTGUN SERIAL NUMBER STRUCTURE shotgun (127.15), each chambered for 12 gauge, magnum load, 3. I do not care about the number as it indicates the guns assembly station in the plant, but the two letters will date the barrel. What is the two letter stamp on the barrel? This would be the two letters on the left side of the barrel that are closest to the receiver.there will be a "number" between these two letters and the receiver for reference. The "V" on the end of the serial number means that your gun is a 12 gauge, 2 3/4" chamber. Example I have a 16 gauge 1100 I bought new in 1979 that has a "M" prefix serial number and barrel code of "PV" or June 1979! It looks to be in very good shape, I would leave it alone. The receiver was most likely made in either 1974, 1975, 1976 or 1977 as indicated by the Prefix "T" in the serial number, but keep in mind this is not completely accurate n determining the exact age of the firearm. The term you're looking for on refinishing the metal on this one is "reblue" not recoat. Simply knock out those two cross pins and it will slide out the bottom of the receiver. Not T1970 if the barrel code was reversed, as you observed that T does not appear in 'BLACKPOWDERX'. Since you have it so far apart, it's very easy to remove the trigger group to clean it and the inside of the receiver. A search finds that Lou Rockwell has written, 'By 1966, the company had sold one million 870 shotguns.' (Per Wikipedia, Remington reached two million 870 guns by 1973.) So 1966-1967 is about when your gun was manufactured. I suspect someone has cut the original 28 inch modified barrel down to make a home defense gun. ![]() The only way to get rid of these is to cut down the barrel. In the days before choke tubes, shotgun barrels on repeaters were almost alwaysĪlso, a lot of these old guns had a poly choke or cutts compensator installed. But I doubt that barrel is original, especially if it's marked modified or MOD. Your 870 has the correct wood, plain butt stock and small "corn cob" ribbed fore end. Texas Armament in Blanket, TX did the parkerizing.īack in the early days of the 870, Remington made several grades of the 870, the most common are two versions, the standard Wingmaster, which you have, and the deluxe, which had checkered stocks. I hated to do it, but it was in really bad shape, bad as in $50 at a pawn shop just a couple of years ago. I sent it out and had it cut down to 18 inches, parkerized and installed the Hogue stock set. This one came to me as a beat up 1955 vintage 870, stock split and missing a big chunk of wood, receiver and barrel both rusty on the left side, like it had laid on something wet. ![]()
